World of Warcraft Burning Crusade scorches its way through retail

Filed in archive Game News on January 29, 2007

World of Warcraft's expansion The Burning Crusade sold around 2.4 Million copies in 24 hours last week, as thousands showed up in launch events around the world to get their hands on The Burning Crusade, World of Warcraft's first retail expansion pack adding two new races and a higher level cap of 70.

World of Warcraft has currently 8 million worldwide subscribers, and 2.4 million copies were sold on the first day it was available. According to Blizzard, that makes it the fastest-selling PC title of all time in the UK and Europe. In a statement, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime not-so-modestly commented that "The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations."

The Burning Crusade zoomed up the charts to debut at number one in the UK all-formats chart, as the US PC game weekly sales data won't be available until next week.
