Why Starcraft II took so long to come...

Blizzard bigwig spoke at a recent AMD event about the reasoning behind waiting years to do a sequal to the massively successful StarCraft. Their reasoning behind not making a sequal sooner is down to graphics technology; the original starcraft was built entirely on a 2D system, and the developers did not think that graphics were good enough to capture the true style of StarCraft until now.
It's an interesting reasoning for a genre that typically is not the most graphically advanced.
