It looks like Bethesda did their homework early as they have just stated that they are "several years" into the Fallout 3 project. According to Bethesda's Pete Hines in a Gamasutra interview: "We are a fairly good ways into the process. The team has ramped up," Hines said, but added that "it will be a little while longer."

Does this mean we will see the long awaited installment in the revered Fallout RPG series soon? "As is the case with all of our games, especially those of this scope, we don't really want to talk about them until they are in a state where we can show you, rather than having you simply picturing it in your minds eye", he said.
I must say while i'm not surprised that Fallout 3 will not be coming out soon, i'm pleasantly surprised that Bethesda has been developing the sequel for quite a long time now. Please Bethesda, don't fail us Fallout fans...
