New Releases for July

Filed in archive Game Previews on July 17, 2010

The gaming industry has inevitably slowed down for the summer months, something to be expected when more people spend time in the sun. It hasn't come to a complete stand still, however, and while none of the year's big releases will be be seen in July and August there may just be the odd lesser-known gem. Out in the next couple of weeks, here are two of our picks.

Braid

A rather intriguing platformer has caught our eye here, but we have found limited information on it as yet. All we know is that there are seven worlds, and that you have to traverse them and save the princess. Sound familiar?

Ancient Civilisations: Triple Pack

A compilation of the legendary Ancient Civilisations games are set for release, and while even the most completist of followers would at best be wasting their money on it, newcomers to the franchise will find this well worth the look.

Golden Joystick Awards

Filed in archive Game News on June 25, 2010

The 28th Annual Joystick Awards are to be held this October, and voting has already started online at Golden Joystick. Last year over 1.2 million votes were cast by "the only people that matter", gamers, and almost 1,000 votes have been cast already for the 2010 awards.

The obvious awards include Action/Adventure games, shooters and RPGs, while some of the more unpredictable categories include Music and Soundtrack, UK Developer and One to Watch (the award that over the years has made gamers aware of many future hits).

Last year the event was dominated by Call of Duty, but Fallout III took Ultimate Game of the Year. The world's largest free MMORPG Runescape led the way in gaming from the UK. Make sure you get your votes in, and wait for the event in London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel on 29th October.

What games will our readers be voting for this year? Let us know.

Blur Review

Filed in archive Game Reviews on June 15, 2010

We got our hands on Blur, the latest highly anticipated racing game for the PC, and took time to check it out.

The first thing we noticed about it was that, in style with its advertising campaigns, it might take itself seriously but does so in a rather tongue in cheek way. It has been described as "Super Mario Kart cross bred with Project Gotham Racing", and balances neon-laden arcade racing like Burnout Paradise with the more tactical power-up play of Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

You start in the single player campaign with one car and a whole career ahead of you, but it was the online aspect which we most enjoyed. It has only been out a while and many have already mastered the use of weapons. Homing missiles can wreck opponents, nitro boosts leave them biting your dust, and The Bolt, rapid bullets shot in either direction, can be used both offensively and defensively, bringing an unpredictable element to play we haven't seen in a game of this genre since Most Wanted. While Need for Speed: Shift is a much more realistic game the engine creates a rather believable interaction with your environment. Anyone who wants a serious racer and yet one with a substantial element of fantasy (unless you believe that vans hooked up with Formula One engines would survive for long) should definitely take a look at this one.

New Releases For the Month of June

Filed in archive Game Previews on June 4, 2010

New Releases For the Month of June
© Gamerzines.com

There are some interesting new releases for the first week of June. Among some of our favourite picks is The Sims 3: Ambitions, the life simulator in which players choose to follow exciting career paths such as ghost hunter and private investigator. It promises to be one of the most immersive games yet in this already very open series, and we'll let you know all about it when we take a look at it on release.

Pure Futbol is being released just in time for the World Cup in South Africa. It takes influence from the most recent Fifa's Be a Pro mode in which gamers see the action from over the shoulder of a customised player. It is the deepest take on the football genre, and while Pure Futbol only includes international teams it has the potential to be a promising innovation in football gaming. We'll tell you if it is worthy of competing against the establishment of Fifa and Pro Evolution.

Powerful racing game Blur also sees its release soon, check back here for reviews of the game when we get our hands on it!
